2000 – 2001
Retrospective exhibition of drawings in the Rupertinum Museum in Salzburg, Austria.
The artist becomes a permanent fellow of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid.
He participates in the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Suite Europa project, held during the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.
2002 – 2004
The Fundación Museo del Grabado Contemporaneo in Marbella presents eleven years of graphic creation as an exhibition and catalogue: Obra Gráfica III (1991- 2002).
The artist creates a ceiling-mural work for the chambers of the Barcelona City Council entitled Núvol en forma de malla per l’Ajuntament de Barcelona. The Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona presents the retrospective exhibition Joan Hernández Pijuan. Tornant a un lloc conegut. 1972-2002. The exhibition tours to the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Neuchatel, the Kontnshalle Malmöe in Malmo and the Galleria Comunale d’Arte Moderna in Bolonia.
2004 – 2005
Awarded the Premi Ciutat de Barcelona d’Arts Plàstiques. Takes part at the 51st Venice Biennale The Experience of Art and Always a Little Further at the Italian Pavilion.
Awarded the Premio Nacional de Arte Gráfico.
Dies in his house in Barcelona on the 28th of December. His ashes lie in Folquer in front of his loved landscape.
